Things You Should Never Say To Your Hairdresser

A journey to the hair salon is both thrilling and nerve-wracking, specifically if you’re seeking to switch things up with a clean-cut or color. Regardless of your nerves, the relationship, and more importantly, the verbal exchange between you and your hairdresser, You should stay as respectful as possible. While your hairdresser may additionally appreciate your business, they don’t continually appreciate the commentary that comes with it.

From accidental impolite remarks to showing up unprepared, these are the things you never say to a hairdresser:

1. “I just want to trim off 1/4 inch”

If keeping your hair long is crucial to you, let your hairdresser understand that. However, don’t tell them you want to trim off only 1/4 inch. The fact is, your hair likely needs to let go of a little more than that (and let’s be honest, who would pay $45 for a 1/4 trim). Let your hairdresser determine the precise measurements. They’ll respect your attachment to the length and additionally ensure your hair still appears healthy.

2. “‘I don’t use box color on my hair” (But you pick your color up at Sallys Beauty Supply)
Whilst hairdressers aren’t the biggest lovers of boxed hair color, they genuinely don’t want you to lie about using it, specifically if they are coloring your hair. Instead of fibbing, own up to it. Let them know that you used box color and that you realized that it’s not the best alternative — that’s why you’re there to see them.

3. Why can’t I make it look this good at home?”
One of the fundamental components of styling your hair is the product you use. And while your hairdresser may be the professional in getting your hair to look a certain way, there’s no reason why you also can’t get your hair to look that way — aside from the fact that you didn’t purchase the product they suggested. If you purchased the product, ask your hairdresser to show you their method. Chances are, you’ll be capable of getting it just right at home!

4. “I didn’t bring a photo”
If you’re going for a particular look, but don’t have an image to back up your description, your hairdresser is most likely going to be irritated. While they may be terrific at their jobs, they are not mind readers. if you by chance forgot the image at home, ask your hairdresser if they can help you find the picture (or something comparable) online.

5. “My old stylist
Speaking about how your old hairstylist used to do your hair is a sneaky way of controlling the scenario. Rather than telling your new hairdresser the way to cut and style your hair, show them an image of what you are hoping to achieve, and believe that they know the best technique to get you there.

6. “Are you sure you know what you’re doing?”
Another phrase you must never say to your hairdresser? “Are you positive you know what you are doing?” Not only is this offensive to a certified professional, it sends a signal that you don’t believe in your hairdresser. Rather than expressing your nerves in doubt, be honest and allow them to recognize you’re nervous about the change.

7. “I use a drugstore shampoo that says color safe, so why does my color still fade?”
As far as product is concerned, hairdressers stay true to their salon-worthy hair care products. So, in case you use drugstore shampoo, and come to them asking why your color is fading, don’t count on them to rally behind your product. If your color is fading, alternatively ask them what shampoo they suggest and use it.

8. “Let’s skip the consultation”
If it’s your first time at a salon and they’re inquiring for a consultation prior to your appointment, don’t pass it up, even if you believe in your hairdresser. The consultation is less about you and more about them. It allows a hairdresser to assess your strands, block out a specific amount of time for the process, and go over a few roadblocks with you before your actual appointment.

9. “Do you have color swatches?”
While swatches may be a great tool for hairdressers to use when mixing colors, the examples won’t usually mirror what the color will turn out like, especially if you’re going from dark to light or light to dark. Rather than inquiring for color swatches, show your hairdresser examples of the shade you like with photos. That way, they are able to use their knowledge and mix a custom color for you.

10. “I love it!” (SIKE!)
A hairdresser never wants to see their customer walk out disappointed about their hair — or worse: irritated. Instead of saying you love it and then going home and crying, allow your stylist to recognize that you aren’t sure about your hair, and ask if they could make modifications. The more honest you are, the better. Your hairstylist will not be pleased with that 1 star review after you’ve just praised them for their outstanding work.

11. “I don’t care”
Let’s be honest: In reality, you do care. It’s wonderful that you believe in your hairdresser enough to say such powerful words, but saying them can mean green-lighting a wacky trend you’d never be caught dead in. instead of misguiding your hairdresser, let them understand that you trust them but that you have your limits on certain hairstyles.

12. “Make me look like this celebrity”
Asking a hairdresser to cut and style your hair like a particular celebrity can be an impossible. Celebrities have a crew of stylists that they pay to change up their appearance. They frequently use extensions, wigs, and so on to create more dramatic changes. So before you chance damaging your hair, discuss why you need your hair to look like a certain movie stars. Together, you and your hairdresser can discover components that inspire your look, rather than copying someone else’s on TV.

13. “I’m running a little late” (1 hour later)
There’s a massive difference between a little late and an hour late. If you’re running really behind, be up front about it and courteous to your stylist’s time. Instead of trying to squeeze yourself into their schedule, be honest and ask your hairdresser if you may come in at a specific time. Some stylists may charge a late fee for showing up 15 minutes late, while other stylists may charge you a no-show fee which can be up to 100% for all services requested.

14. “Will this haircut make my face look fat?”
By asking your stylist this question, you’re putting them in a difficult position. If you are self-conscious about the way your face appears, your stylist will not help boost your confidence. If they say “sure,” it will upset you. And if they say “no,” but in the end, you believe it does, you may end up irritated at your stylist.

15. “Nothing at all”
What’s worse than saying any of the above? Saying nothing at all. Staying quiet not only makes it an uncomfortable experience between you and your stylist; It also makes it hard for the stylist to tell whether you’re truly happy with the work they’re doing. You don’t have to be a Chatty Cathy, but some form of conversation will make for a more enjoyable experience overall between you and your stylist.
